The new name of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is pretty much confirmed now
Samsung's next flagship foldable almost certainly won't be called the Galaxy Z Fold 8.
As we get closer to the official unveiling, more details keep surfacing – and they're lining up with earlier leaks. We'd already heard that Samsung was planning to shake up its naming strategy, and now a new leak basically confirms it.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is practically official
It's safe to assume that Samsung will go with Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra for the follow‑up to the Galaxy Z Fold 7. Recent leaked info has now been backed up by an actual certification. According to a SamMobile report, the organization that oversees Bluetooth standards has certified five variants of Samsung's upcoming foldable. The listing reveals the device will be called the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, with model numbers SC-56G, SCG39, SM-F976C, SM-F976Q, and SM-F976Z.
You can forget about the Galaxy Z Wide Fold
There's no official word yet, but it's looking very likely that Samsung will use the plain Galaxy Z Fold 8 name for its other, wider foldable model. This device was previously rumored to be called the Galaxy Z Wide Fold or Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide – but let's be honest, those never sounded quite right. This new naming scheme would also help highlight the differences between the two models. The wider version is rumored to have just two cameras and a 4,800 mAh battery, while the Z Fold 8 Ultra is expected to pack a 5,000 mAh battery and the already iconic triple‑camera setup on the back.
Welcome to the age of the "Ultra" foldable
Even rumors about Apple's first foldable iPhone have gone through similar name changes. At first, people called it the iPhone Fold, but more recent leaks suggest it might be called the iPhone Ultra. Just like the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra will join the Galaxy S26 Ultra and the Galaxy Watch Ultra in using that flashy word, a foldable iPhone wouldn't be Apple's first "Ultra" product either. Apple already has the Apple Watch Ultra and the M‑series Ultra chip for its Macs. Let's face it – words like "Plus" and "Pro" have lost a lot of their meaning over the years. So it's no surprise that brands are reaching for something newer and even flashier. My colleague Adrian thinks Samsung might end up diluting its own Ultra brand – which, to be fair, is currently in good standing thanks to the advanced features on the Galaxy S26 Ultra. That said, the latest leaks about bigger battery capacity and faster charging on the Z Fold 8 Ultra make me agree with him. Yes, a 5,000 mAh battery and 45W charging are welcome upgrades. But let's be real – they're still not on par with the best foldable phones on the market, or even with Samsung's own best.
